Thelma Hileman

Thelma M. Hileman, 89, of Mount Pleasant, died at 8:50 a.m. Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born July 3, 1913, near Mount Union, she was the daughter of John and Effa V. Matthews Chandler. She married Virgil Woodrow Hileman on June 17, 1939. He died May 30, 1987.

Mrs. Hileman was a 1931 graduate of Danville High School. She attended Grinnell College and graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1947. She taught school for nearly 30 years, the last 17 years as a kindergarten teacher in Mount Pleasant.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Mount Pleasant and a 50-year member of Bethlehem Chapter 38 of Order of the Eastern Star and the Founders Chapter of the TTT Society. She also was a member of Mount Pleasant Women's Club, the Child Conservation League and Chautauqua Questers. She had belonged to several bridge clubs.

Survivors include one son, John C. Hileman of Mount Pleasant; one daughter, Mary Fitzgerald of Maryville, Tenn., and three grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at the Weir Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Hileman will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery, Mount Pleasant.

Memorials have been established for her church, Henry County Cancer Fund and Crossroads Hospice of Southeast Iowa.
