Retired Farmer, Mt. Union, Dies
Special to the Hawkeye GazetteNew London - Adolpheus Mathews, 86, retired farmer, died at his home in Mt. Union Saturday at 10 p.m. after a short illness.
Adolpheus Mathews, son of Caroline E. Pattison and Jesse Mathews was born at Danville April 23, 1858. He married Nellie Frances Lutes at New London on Oct. 10, 1883. She died Nov. 30, 1891.
In 1896 at Danville he was again married to Mary Lorena Moore, who survives. Farming west of Mt. Union, Mathews retired to his home in Mt. Union in the fall of 1919.
Besides his wife he is survived by a son, Glen A., of Mt. Pleasant; a daughter, Mrs. Nellie May Anderson, Mt. Union; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, J.A. Mathews of Winfield; three sisters, Mrs. Ella Linch, Mrs. Fay Crocker, and Mrs. Effa Chandler, all of Mt. Pleasant. One son died in infancy.
The body will remain at the Elliot chapel in New London until time for the services Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Methodist church, located 6 miles north of New London. Rev. Curtis, pastor of the church will be in charge, and burial will be in Trinity cemetery.
