Thelma Synnes

Thelma Rosiene Synnes, 87, of 117 Orchard Lane, New London, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 1996.

Born June 4, 1909, south of New London, she was the daughter of John Adam and Harriet Cooper Iles. She married Irving C. Synnes May 8, 1930, at New London. He died Jan. 21, 1971.

She was a graduate of New London High School and attended Iowa Wesleyan College.

Mrs. Synnes was a homemaker. She and her husband also owned and operated Alamo Theater in New London for 30 years and New London Laundromat for many years.

She was a 50-year member of United Methodist Church in New London and a member of Unity Circle, Chapter E.V. of P.E.O., Eastern Star Chapter No. 440, Ricordo Club, Areme Club, Birthday Club, Garden Club and New London Senior Citizens. She also served on H.J. Nugen Library Board for over 20 years. She enjoyed her family and her gardening.

Survivors include one daughter, Linda McGohan of rural Mount Pleasant; two grandsons; one sister, Freeda Hale of Mount Union; and two nieces.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and an a brother in infancy.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Chapel in New London, with the family receiving friends from 2 to 4 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Synnes will be 11 a.m. Monday at Elliott Chapel, with the Rev. Shirley Hoffmann officiating. Burial will be in Burge Cemetery in New London.

Memorials have been established for New London Rescue Unit and International Heifer Project.
