Bernard Bates

Bernard Kauffman Bates, 94, formerly of the Trenton area, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 1999, at the Parkview Home in Wayland.

Born April 1, 1905, he was the son of James William and Magdalena Kauffman Bates. He married Helen Todd on Aug. 14, 1930, in Morning Sun.

Mr. Bates attended school in the Trenton and Mount Pleasant area. He was a farmer in the Trenton area for many years, moving to Wayland in 1987. He had lived at the Parkview Home since 1991.

He was a member of Finley United Methodist Church and the Farm Bureau, a past member of the Odd Fellows, served on the Henry County Fair Board for many years and was active in the Henry County 4-H program.

Survivors include one daughter, Martha Ann Bates Bright of Moravia; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, one sister, one son and one grandson.

The funeral for Mr. Bates will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Finley United Methodist Church, north of Trenton, with the Revs. Carl Klein and Don Coffin officiating. Burial will be in Finley Cemetery.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home but the family invites friends and relatives for fellowship after the service at the church.

Memorials have been established for Finley Church Cemetery Association and the Parkview Home.

Beatty Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
