Esther Irwin

Esther Anna Mary Young Irwin, 103, of New London, formerly of Yarmouth, died at 10:25 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at New London Nursing & Rehab.

Born Dec. 16, 1899, in Kingston, she was the daughter of August and Anna Neisus Young. On June 19, 1926, she married John Russell Irwin in Burlington. He died Nov. 5, 1973.

Mrs. Irwin was a homemaker. She worked for a time at Burlington Basket Co. She and her husband also owned and operated Irwin's Grocery in Yarmouth.

She attended Pineywood Country School and later Burlington Business College. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mediapolis and also attended St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kingston. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening and going to her cabin on the Cedar River.

Survivors include one daughter, Jane Crouch of Yarmouth; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, one daughter and one great-granddaughter.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Chapel in New London, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Irwin will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Elliott Chapel, with the Rev. Rick Crooks officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery in Mount Union.

Memorials have been established for Grace United Church in Conesville and New London Nursing & Rehab Center.
