Charles Hanna

Charles N. Hanna, 72, of Mount Pleasant, died Saturday, April 3, 1999, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born Sept. 2, 1926, near Middletown, he was the son of Chester and Birdie Smith Hanna. On Sept. 22, 1946, he married Donna R. Darbyshire in Crawfordsville. She died in 1988. He then married Sarah James on Feb. 14, 1998.

Mr. Hanna was a 1944 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School. He was a Korean War Navy veteran. He farmed on the family farm west of Mount Pleasant with his father for 20 years. He sold insurance with Henry County Mutual Insurance Co. He was a real estate broker for 30 years in Mount Pleasant, where he owned his own business.

He was a member of Mount Pleasant City Council from 1964 to 1967. He served as mayor from 1970 to 1975. He was on the Long Creek Cemetery Board for 25 years and currently was on the Henry County Board of Adjustment. He was active in First United Methodist Church, serving as head usher for 10 years. He was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed traveling, checkers, bowling, bridge and other card games.

Survivors include his wife; two brothers, Ralph Hanna of Cisco, Texas, and Robert Hanna of Mount Pleasant; one sister, Murrell Morgan of Burlington; two brother-in-laws; four stepsons, David James of Mount Pleasant, Michael James of Indianapolis, Ind., Peter James of Sacramento, Calif., and Richard James of Denver; six stepgrandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, two nephews and one niece.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Monday in Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Hanna will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in First United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Bob Cook and Kiboko Kiboko officiating. Burial with full military rites will be in Long Creek Cemetery, south of Danville.

A memorial has been established for First United Methodist Church.
