Leland Parks

Leland John Parks, 70, of Burlington, died at 7:05 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Oct. 12, 1929, near Salem, he was the son of Vernon E. and Lela Frances Watts Parks. On March 25, 1961, he married Dorothy Marie Snyder in Burlington. She died April 29, 1999.

Mr. Parks did photo mapping for the government, worked at a small repair and sales TV shop in West Burlington and worked at Champion Spark Plug from 1957 to 1989.

He was a 1949 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School and served in the Air Force from 1950 to 1954. While in the service, he attended schools for photo mapping and topographical drafting at Fort Belvoir, Va. Other service time was spent in Puerto Rico and Shreveport, La.

He was of the Baptist faith. He was an avid antique tool collector and belonged to Midwest Tool Collectors and Association Club and THCCK Hardware Companies Club, United Auto Workers No. 1237. He enjoyed the outdoors, golfing, arrowhead hunting and being with his family.

Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia Billings of Burlington and Carrie Darrah of West Burlington; one son, Brian Parks of Burlington; three grandchildren; and three brothers, Carroll Parks of Mount Pleasant, Loren Parks of Cedar Rapids and Gale Parks of Loveland, Colo.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Visitation will begin at noon today in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Parks will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Lunning Chapel, with Pastor Maurice Moore officiating. Burial with military rites by VFW Posts 10102 and 9162 will be in Long Creek Cemetery in Danville.

A memorial has been established for Long Creek Cemetery.
