Robert Phillips

Robert Monroe Phillips, 69, of Burlington, died at 1:45 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at Burlington Care Center.

Born July 13, 1933, in Huntsville, Ill., he was the son of Sherman and Eva Cox Phillips. He married Bonnie Haulk on Aug. 26, 1951, in Macomb, Ill.

Mr. Phillips was a 1958 graduate of Macomb High School. He worked at Mississippi Bakery for 26 years, retiring in July 1995.

He was of the Methodist faith and a member of Blackhawk Saddle Club. He and his wife spent their winters in Harlingen, Texas, and were campground hosts at Lake Geode for the past five years. He enjoyed camping, fishing, CB radios (his handle was "Old Whiskers") and their dog.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, John Phillips of Mount Pleasant, Randy Phillips of Van Buren, Ark., and Robbie Phillips of Burlington; one daughter, Connie Beriou of Burlington; 23 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Retha Butler of Morning Sun and Pat Shannon and Jane Sommerfeld, both of Burlington; and two brothers, Joe Phillips of Danville and David Phillips of North Liberty.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two grandchildren.

Friends may call after 8 a.m. Thursday in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Phillips will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the chapel, with the Revs. Leonard Schantz and Les Haddaway officiating. Burial will be in Long Creek Cemetery, Danville.

A memorial has been established for a flagpole on the campgrounds at Geode State Park.
