Earl Grinstead

Earl Eugene Grinstead, 80, of Danville, died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at New London Nursing & Rehab in New London.

Born Dec. 2, 1920, in Des Moines County, he was the son of George Harold and Vada Parrott Grinstead. He married Wanda Mae Miller on Dec. 6, 1941, in Pleasant Grove.

Mr. Grinstead was a 1938 graduate of Danville High School and a Navy veteran, serving as a radar technician. He served as Danville postmaster for 30 years. He previously worked for Morrell Packing in Ottumwa and drove gravel trucks for Bill Morrison and Dale McElhinney.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Danville, where he held several offices, a Danville Lions Club member and Lion of the Year in 1997. He served as a volunteer fireman in Danville for 20 years and was on the Danville Telephone Board for 30 years. He volunteered with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and as a van driver for St. Francis Care Center. He was a lifelong member of Masonic Lodge 48 AF & AM and received the Governor's Volunteer Award from Gov. Branstad in 1995.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Roger Evan Grinstead of Minster, Ohio; one daughter, Mary Beth Murrell of West Burlington; five grandchildren; one brother, William Grinstead of Danville; and one sister, Wanda Nelson of Danville.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson.

Visitation will begin at noon Sunday at Elliott Chapel in New London, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Grinstead will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Danville, with Pastor Harry Hollingsworth officiating. Burial will be in Jaggar Cemetery in Danville.

A memorial has been established.
