Robert Shipley

Robert Dale Shipley, 85, of New London, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Born March 8, 1916, in New London, he was the son of Wesley and Mamie Cooper Shipley. He married Eileen Haines on May 17, 1939, in Burlington.

Mr. Shipley was a 1934 graduate of New London High School. He owned Shipley Plumbing & Heating in New London, and then worked for Brockway Plumbing & Heating and AY McDonald for 10 years before retiring.

He was a member of New London United Methodist Church, where he held several offices, United Methodist Men, Deerwood Golf Club and Masonic Lodge 28 AF & AM, where he served as past master and was worshipful master of the lodge 50 years ago for their 100th anniversary. He was a former member of New London School Board and Fire Department. He was an avid golfer and loved yard work and flowers. He was a wood craftsman and made beautiful grandmother clocks for his children.

Survivors include his wife; twin daughters, Margaret Ann "Peggy" Cady of Danville and Barbara Lee Walz of Plano, Texas; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Brown of Sun City West, Ariz.; one niece; and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son.

Visitation will begin at noon Friday at Elliott Chapel in New London, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. A Masonic service will be at 6:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Shipley will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the chapel, with Pastor Matt Miller officiating. Burial will be in Jaggar Cemetery in Danville.

A memorial has been established for his church.
