Anderson Killed Instantly At Street Crossing
Struck by car on Jefferson Late Thursday

Fred Niece Driving Car; Mr. Anderson Thrown to Pavement

Axel Anderson, 77, was killed instantly Thursday evening when struck by a car driven by Fred Niece of this city. Mr. Anderson was attempting to cross Jefferson street at the Jefferson-Henry intersection when he was hit by the Niece car and was thrown about twenty five feet. He was dead when physicians arrived.
Niece, who is employed at the Brown meat market and stays at the Frank Barr home was driving north on Jefferson and saw Mr. Anderson step into the treet, but was unable to turn the car sufficiently to avoid striking him. Students See Accident
Clayton Jones and Roger Waters, students at Iowa Wesleyan, were sitting on the Sigma Phi Epsilon porch and Charles Boyer, also a student at
Wesleyan, was getting into a car in front of the fraternity home when the accident occurred and saw the car strike Mr. Anderson. Clifford Bauer was in the car in front of the house, but did not see the accident. They saw Mr. Anderson start to walk from the northeast corner of the
intersection at an angle across the street to the southwest. Niece approached from the south and apparently saw Mr. Anderson as the car horn was sounded.
Mr. Anderson, who was very deaf, failed to hear the horn, however, and walked directly in front of the machine. Thrown to the Northwest Niece whirled his car to the left just before the car struck Mr. Anderson and the result the body was tossed to the north west. He struck the pavement face downward. Niece's car traveled on a short distance and crashed into the rear of the Bauer car, which was facing north on the west side of the street. The Niece car was slightly damaged and one rear wheel and the back of the Bauer car were bent and broken.
The ambulance and the physician were called to the scene at once, but death had been instantaneous. Mr. Anderson was badly bruised and cut on the face and was bruised on the leg were the car bumper evidently struck.
Mr. Anderson lived alone much of the time at the home on North Jefferson but during the present school year, a grandson, Warren Woline, had
been making his home with Mr. Anderson. Woline left about an hour before and at that time, Mr. Anderson was reading a newspaper. It had been his custom to retire about seven o'clock in the evening, but recently had been complaining of
not being able to sleep. He evidently decided to go for a walk before retiring. Late in the afternoon, about four o'clock, he had gone to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Cyrus Jordan, and visited there.

Lived Near Swedesburg
Mr. and Mrs. Anderson moved to Mt. Pleasant from a farm two miles south of Swedesburg sixteen years ago. Mrs. Anderson died about ten years ago. Four daughters survive, Mrs. Con Spangler, Mrs. Will Woline, Mrs. Albert Woline and Mrs Cyrus Jordan of Mt. Pleasant; also several grandchildren and nephews and nieces. One daughter, Mrs. Oscar Hookom, died several years ago and one son in infancy. Three brothers and a sister preceded him in death."
