G. W. Smith, Civil War Veteran, Dies

George W. Smith, 86, veteran of the Civil War passed away Sunday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Anna Peterson on South White Street where he had been making his home since in April of this year, when he came here, the place of his nativity to spend the closing years of his life. He had formerly spent many years at Troy, Ohio, but old age came and as there were no relatives in Ohio to care for him he came here to be near what few relatives he had. He has been growing enfeebled from old age, but became bedfast only Thursday. Death was due to old age.

He was a member of the G. A. R. and was well known among the patriotic organizations as a very interesting character.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock from Crane’s undertaking parlor and burial will take place in the Williford cemetery where others members of his family are buried.
