Harold Henry Shelangoski, 82, of Mount Pleasant, died of cancer Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at his home.

Born Jan. 21, 1921, near Brighton, he was the son of Stephen and Velma Hinkle Shelangoski. On Jan. 21, 1947, he married Eloise Emry in Fairfield.

Mr. Shelangoski first worked as a farmhand. He then worked for John Morrell in Ottumwa. After moving to Mount Pleasant, he worked for the Benner Tea Co., Hoaglin's Department Store, Fankhauser's Dairy, Vega Industries, Napa Auto Parts, Mount Pleasant News and Moorman's Feed. He also worked for General Electric in Burlington for 16 years before retiring.

He was raised and educated in Jefferson County. He was a World War II Army veteran, serving overseas for 39 months with the 31st Artillery Battalion in the Aleutian Islands and the Southern Philippines. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post of Mount Pleasant and a former governor of the Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his wife; one brother, Lyle Shelangoski of Wayland; one sister, Lucille Garrels of New London; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will begin at noon today at Beatty Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Shelangoski will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Beatty Funeral Home, with the Rev. Charles Tweed officiating. Burial will be in Friends Cemetery in Richland.

A memorial has been established for Crossroads Hospice.
