Virgil Jacob Hall, 83, of Winfield, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at the Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield.

Born Jan. 12, 1918, in rural Columbus Junction, he was the son of Lou B. and Winniefred Gipple Hall. He married Shirley Jean Hewitt. In later years they divorced. She died in January 1999.

He was a graduate of the Wyman High School, served in the Army during World War II, farmed most of his life, and did carpentry work. He enjoyed doing work to help others. He was a former member of the Spring Run United Methodist Church and, in later years, was a member of the Winfield United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Melodie Wagner of Ossian; one granddaughter; one brother, Harold T. Hall of Washington, Iowa; and four sisters, Vera Davis of Winfield, Marjorie Prior of Columbus Junction, Betty Bitting of Crawfordsville, and Wanda Graber of Wayland.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Honts Funeral Home in Winfield. There will be no family visitation.

The funeral for Mr. Hall will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Winfield United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jo Hary officiating. Burial will follow at the Columbus City Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.
