Bessie Schlatter, 82, of Wayland, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born March 1, 1919, southeast of Washington, she was the daughter of Sam and Fern May Baker. On May 21, 1939, she married Warren Schlatter.

Mrs. Schlatter attended Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant and taught in rural schools. She was a cook at Parkview Home, managed the Sail Inn Cafe of Wayland, and did custom baking, especially decorated cakes, from her home.

She was an active member of Eicher Emmanuel Mennonite Church and the Eicher Women's Mennonite Society. She was church organist, Sunday school teacher and bible school teacher for many years. She enjoyed reading, playing the piano, sewing, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Shirley Sommer of Pandora, Ohio, Nancy Brenneman of Wellman, and Mary Marner of Kalona; two brothers, Everette Baker of Richland and Donald Baker of Farson; four grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Zieglowsky of Wayland; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, one sister, and one granddaughter.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday at Wayland Mennonite Church, where the family will receive friends from 3 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Schlatter will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Eicher Mennonite Church, northeast of Wayland. Burial will be in Eicher Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Parkview Home in Wayland.

Beatty Funeal Home in Wayland is in charge of arrangements.
