Last Rites for Edward Van Dorin

Memorial services for the late Edward Van Dorin were held at the Cookes-Lunning Home at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

Mrs. Ethel E. Saums of "The Church of God" officiated bringing the message from Proverbs 18:24: "And there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother." Mrs. Jake Thorington and Mrs. Ida Plummer sang "In the Garden," and "Face to Face," accompanied by Mrs. Max Stein, organist.

Edward M. Van Dorin son of Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Van Dorin was born in the Denova neighborhood on "Big Cedar Creek" May 21, 1892 and passed away at his home at 2 a.m. Wednesday morning, Sept. 27, 1950, at the age of 58 years, 4 months and 6 days. Most of his life was spent in and around Mt. Pleasant, Ia., with the exception of 4 years spent in Illinois.

Dec. 12, 1912, at the home of his sister, Mrs. Rilda Delvin, he was united in marriage to Adelia Warner of Mt. Pleasant. To this union were born 3 sons and 5 daughters, 3 of the daughters now deceased.

He was converted many years ago in a prayer meeting at the Bill Craig home and found great joy serving his Lord and Savior, faithfully attending God's mission on W. Washington st. in Mt. Pleasant until it closed.

His was an humble but happy home here. It held the best of life's treasures for him, Jesus, a faithful wife, precious children and grandchildren, with whom he spent his last evening playing with the grandchildren, and singing Gospel Hymns. He knew the end was near and still thinking of others said to his faithful wife, "If you don't want to be alone, better get some one." His testimony to the Dr. was, "When I die, I'll die happy."

He is survived by his wife, Adelia, 3 sons, Willard and Newt of Mt. Pleasant, and Edward Jr. of the U.S. Navy stationed at Treasure Island, California, 2 daughters, Mrs. Florence Parker, of Trenton and Mrs. Mildred Standley of Mt. Pleasant. There remains one brother, Lewis, who resides between Mt. Pleasant and Salem.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and 3 little daughters, Beatrice, Elizabeth Florence, and Josephine, and by 3 sisters, Mrs. Rilda Delvin, Mrs. Elsie Mendenhall and Mrs. Allan Warner, also one brother Newton Van Dorin.

A large number of relatives and friends and many beautiful flowers gave testimony to the love they had for this dear one.

The body was tenderly carried to its final resting place in the White Oak Cemetery by Messrs. Dale Penn, Eugene Parker, Everett Brownell, Glen Milliman, Geo. Calhoun and Paul Sanderson.
