FORMER WAYLAND RESIDENT DIES

David E. Miller, 76 was found dead along the Iowa River north of Fredonia, Monday afternoon.

Mr. Miller, a resident of Fredonia, was a retired farmer and had lived for many years in the Wayland and Washington communities.

He left home Monday morning to fish in the Iowa River. When he did not return home in the afternoon his wife became concerned and had neighbors search for him. He was found by the river late in the afternoon.

Dr. J. W. Pence, Louisa county coroner, determined death was due to natural causes.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 21, at Washington. Rev. Halsey E. Wakelin will be in charge. Burial will be in North Hill cemetery near Wayland.

Mr. Miller was born February 9, 1877 near Wayland, the son of Benjamin R. and Mary (Miller) Miller. He was reared and educated in that community. He married Malinda Roth, who died in 1931, and on October 28,1939, he was married to Mrs. Nellie Matthess. They moved to Fredonia in April.

Survivors include his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Clarence Schlatter of Nickerson, Kansas; three step-son: Verne and Floyd Mills both of Gary, Ind., and Charles E. Mills of Iowa City; one step-daughter, Mrs. Fred Wardford of Gary, Ind.; three brothers, Dan of Redwood Falls, Minn., Ben and John of Washington, Mrs. Mamie Lantz of West Chester, Mrs. Lavina Payne of Wayland and Mrs. Vernie Johnson of Fairfield; and a number of grandchildren.

One daughter and a sister are deceased.
