Melvina Conner Harris

Mrs. George Harris, East Madison street, died suddenly Sunday with paralysis. She came down stairs Sunday morning and started the fire in the heating stove. That is, she shook down the grate. She was stricken while doing this and her daughters found her a little later. She had fallen against the stove. Her arm kept her from getting burned, although her arm was burned a little. When her daughters got to her she asked to be helped to her bed. It was the last thing she said and at one o'clock she passed away.

George Harris, the husband, has been near Duluth, Minn and he was reached and got here Monday morning. Mrs. Harris leaves the husband and five children, all grown, to mourn her death. The children are Mrs. Bertha Holt, and Miss Viola, at home. Miss Grace, who teaches in the Colored schools at Buxton. Miss Nora, who teaches in Atlantic City, N.J. and Will who is in Minnesota.

Mrs. Harris was a most worthy woman and left a fine family. Mrs. Harris' maiden name was Mason (sic)and she was born in Ohio, September 15, 1862. The funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 PM from the A.M.E. church. Interment was made at Forest Home cemetery.

(NOTE: This is my great grandmother. The mention of Grace is my grandmother who lived with my family until she died in 1980. They list Nelvina's maiden name as Mason, but she was a Conner - her mother was Jane MASON CONNER.)
