George M. Harris Funeral is Held

George Madison Harris was born August 14, 1852, in Indiana and departed this life in Mt. Pleasant on Wednesday morning, April 10, 1940, at the age of 87 years, 7 months and 24 days. He was married to Melvina Conner in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa on January 1, 1880. A few years of his early married life were spent in Fairfield, Iowa and Lincoln, Nebraska, while a half century was spent in our local community.

His early education was obtained in Indiana. In large measure, he was a self-made man, supplementing his training by completing a course in sign writing in International School of Scranton, Pennsylvania. He had been at one time, a member of the University of Nebraska band. He became skilled as a taxidermist and as a lapidarist. After the age of seventy, he became proficient in landscape painting, his travels forming the basis for his pictures. He was of the Presbyterian faith.

His wife departed this life on January 15, 1917, and a daughter, Viola on June, 1939. Surviving him are: A son, William, of Chicago, Ill; three daughters, Nora of Atlantic City, N.J., Bertha Holt of Mt. Pleasant, and Grace Potter of Waterloo, Iowa; four grandchildren, and one great grandchild. A brother, Ewing W. Harris of Zanesville, Ohio and two sisters, Anice Harris and Mrs. Charles Wright of Louisville, Kentucky, and other relatives.

Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon at two o'clock in the Crane funeral home. Rev. John R. Fraser of Wapello, Iowa, was in charge, assisted by Rev. R. A. Broyles of Waterloo, Iowa. Interment was in Forest Home cemetery.
