DEATH OF CHARLES DAVIS

Early on Sunday morning occurred the death of Charles Davis. It was not unexpected as he had been seriously ill for two months and in broken health for years. Born in January, 1820 he was in the 75th year of his age. Born in Lancaster, Ohio, he married at Springfield, Ohio in June 1845. Miss Mary E. Mason, who survives him and who for almost fifty years has been his faithful wife and helpmate. In 1856 they moved to this city, which has since been his home, though for near sixteen years Mr. Davis was located in business at Minneapolis. Two years ago he returned to his home here which his wife had kept intact and ready for him.

In the years before and during the war Chas. Davis was quite a notable character, recognized over the state as one of the most intelligent and enterprising of his race. He was never a slave, neither his wife or their parents. Mr. Davis traced his lineage in direct descent from one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence who was his great grandfather. Mr. and Mrs. Davis have had six children, none now living. Four of these died in infancy, two a son and a daughter lived to mature age. Charles, the son married and had one son who died in Denver; Charles and his wife are both dead. Mary, the daughter, married and had one son, Charles Wade, who at last accounts was traveling with a minstrel troupe in Canada. James Davis, who lived here many years and was quite noted as a musician, was a nephew of Charles Davis. Charles Davis probably knew about as many people in Henry County and could tell all about them, as any person in the county. He was a genial, social man, having his faults and weaknesses like many others, but kind hearted and industrious. He was buried on Monday in Forest Home Cemetery. Peace to his ashes.
