Wayland News: July 12, 1923

John Schlatter was born in Waterloo County, Ontario Canada, June 24, 1851 and died in his home in Wayland Iowa, July 4, 1923, aged 72 years and 10 days. He came to Washington County when a child living on a farm northeast of Noble where he grew to manhood. When starting up for himself, he purchased a farm east of Trenton, Iowa in Henry County. After this he changed farms several times. In the fall of 1913 his youngest son took charge of the old homestead three miles southeast of town and he moved to Wayland which was his late home.

He accepted Christ as his personal savior when a young man uniting with the Amish Mennonite Church and remained a loyal member until his death.

On the seventh day of September, 1876 he was united in marriage with Katie Miller. This union was blessed with six children, three sons, and three daughters.

About a year ago his health was somewhat impaired but a physician was not consulted until late last year. It seemed his ailment did not yield to treatment and he gradually failed until death, due to internal cancer, claimed him. His death is the first in his family. He leaves his deeply bereaved wife, three sons, David, William, and John of Wayland Iowa; three daughters , Mrs. Simon Gingerich and Mrs. Cornelius Schrock of Wayland, Iowa, and Mrs. W.E. Yoder of Parnell Iowa; five brothers, Charles and Jacob of Wayland, Iowa, Joseph of Denver, Colorado, Peter of Kalispel, Montana, Nicholous of Albion, California; three sisters, Mrs. Katie Conrad, Mrs. Benjamin Roth, and Mrs. Mary Freyenberger of Wayland Iowa; ten grandchildren, two foster grandchildren, and a large concourse of friends and neighbors to mourn their loss.

The funeral was held at the Sugar Creek Church near Wayland, Iowa, Saturday forenoon, conducted by the brethren Daniel Graber, Sebastian Gerig, and Chriss Graber. Internment in the cemetery nearby.
