Derald Frederick Edwards, 82, of Wayland, died following a brief illness Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, at his home.

Born July 13, 1922, north of Coppock, he was the son of Fred and Jessie Carpenter Edwards. On March 10, 1946, he married Yvonne "Bonnie" Ericks in Hoisington, Kan.

Mr. Edwards farmed until 1973 then worked as a foreman for Perfex in Washington for 11 years until retiring.

He attended Franklin Country School. He lived on the home farm until 1974, when he moved to Wayland. He was a member of Cottonwood Church in Wayland. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran and served with the 28th Bombardment Squadron for four years and was in the Pacific Theater for one year. He was a member of the American Legion and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed fishing and boating.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Micheal Edwards and William "Bill" Edwards, both of Wayland; one daughter, Cynthia Meredith of Lancaster, Ky.; nine grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 13 great–grandchildren; and one sister, Ethel Hanze of Fairfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, one brother, two nephews and one stepgreat–grandchild.

Visitation will be from noon to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Jones Eden Funeral Home in Washington, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Edwards will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Cottonwood Church, with the Rev. Nancy Renfro officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Cottonwood Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Hospice of Washington County, Cottonwood Church and Wayland First Responders.
