Lois Jean Liechty Jones died May 24, 2005, at University Retirement Community in Davis. She was 79.

A memorial service begins at 10 a.m. Friday, June 24, at the Davis Cemetery, Eighth Street and Pole Line Road.

Born Sept. 2, 1925, in Wayland, Iowa, she was a 1942 graduate of Wayland Iowa High School and graduated in 1951 from the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls (Iowa State Teachers College). After graduation, she attended Teachers College at Columbia University in New York for additional teacher training.

She taught school in Haskins, Wyman and Muscatine, Iowa, before moving to California in 1956 where she continued to follow her interests in teaching mathematics, actuarial work in health insurance and as a certified property manager and broker.

She took all of these skills with her as a member of the Davis Senior Housing and Care Continuum board of directors. That senior housing project opened in Davis in February 2000 as the University Retirement Community.

She and her husband shared interests in the visual arts, music and dance. She served on the Art Friends board of the UC Davis art department. The UC Davis music department's Empyrean Ensemble plans to dedicate to her its upcoming evening of music composed by graduate students.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Benjamin of Wayland, Iowa.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Norman O. Jones of Davis; a son, Michael B. Jones of Sacramento; and her brother Robert and his wife of Gutenberg, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts be made to the University Retirement Community Foundation, Attn: Tracy Carlier, 1515 Shasta Drive in Davis, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
