Mt. Pleasant Daily News, Monday, September 15, 1941NAMING McMILLAN PARK
We think the honoring the name of McMillan by renaming the Fairgrounds “McMillan Park” was wholly proper. The McMillan name appears very often in the early records of Henry county and especially Center township and Mt. Pleasant. A McMillan was elected to the lower house of the Iowa legislature away back in 1842. In 1855 a McMillan was city clerk and another city assessor. Singularly enough after the Fair association was reorganized in the fall of 1865, Charles McMillan, father of Tom McMillan, was its president, and the present fairgrounds had recently been purchased. The first McMillan family arrived here in 1840 and located on a farm just northwest of the present city limits and a school house nearby was known as the McMillan school. The McMillan name is one that Mt. Pleasant can with satisfaction preserve in a public park.
