HISTORICAL MARKER ERECTED AT IWC

Iowa Wesleyan College has complete the erection of an historical marker on the site of the former Mt. Pleasant German College [1873-1909], which had been affiliated with Iowa Wesleyan for the training of German Methodists on the academy, college and theological level. The German College was moved to Warrenton, Mo., in 1910 to amalgamate with Central Wesleyan College, another German Methodist institution.

The marker was authorized by the Iowa Wesleyan Board of Trustees at the February 17th Founders Day Convocation to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the founding of the school. It is located south of the Adam Trieschmann Hall of Science on a spot approximately where the former sidewalk led up to the front entrance.

The monument is constructed of bricks saved from the original building which was razed in 1961. Set in the table top of the monument is the commemorative tablet placed over the entrance of the former building in 1910 by the alumni of the German College. The front of the monument bears a bronze plaque stating that the marker was erected by the Havighurst family, long associated with the German College. It is a memorial to Rudolph Havighurst, President of the German College [1873-1874] and secretary of the Board of Trustees until 1900 and his son, Edwin Stanton Havighorst, President [1898-1908]. The fund was established by the sons and daughters of Christian Rudolph Havighorst, Class of 1882; Edwin Stanton Havighorst, 1887; Freeman Alfred Havighorst, 1889; and Emelie Havighorst Munster, Instructor in Music at the German College.

Early in this century the family changed the spelling of the name to Havighurst.
