Wayland News – April 16, 1925

Ku Klux Klan

The Ku Klux Klan undertook to hold a public meeting in Wayland Wednesday evening, in defiance of the mayor, who informed them earlier in the evening that the meeting could not be held within the corporate limits, in compliance with the town ordinance and the decision of the council. The mayor was informed that the meeting would be held, regardless of his request and the speaker, E.B. Shellhouse, of Washington, and others, accompanied by quite a crowd, went to the F. M. Reel pasture in the south part of town and proceeded to open the meeting with prayer. At the close of the prayer, Marshall Troutman placed the speaker under arrest and took him to the mayor’s office where he was placed under $150 bonds to appear for trial Monday afternoon at 2:00. Anticipating trouble, Mayor Magdefrau telephoned the sheriff’s office and deputies Miller and Mehl of the sheriff’s office were here in a remarkably short space of time but their services were not needed as the marshall had taken care of the job. The Klan meeting was held later at P. R. Alliman’s north of town.
