HOMECOMING A SUCCESS

Celebration the Best Ever Held in Wayland

The homecoming which was advertised, talked about, written about and otherwise discussed for some year prior to its actually taking place, was held as planned on the 9th, 10th, and 11th of August. Of all of the celebrations that Wayland has carried out and attempted to carry out, this was by far the greatest. Everything that was to take place was put on without a single exception and every number on the program was pleasing to the highest degree. The weather was idea and despite the busy season on the farms, the crowds were larger than those predicted by the most optimistic. The evening programs were especially well attended, the big tent filled to overflowing each night.

Many homecomers arrived early in the week and before the first day of the celebration a goodly number of Wayland’s former residents were greeting their old friends here.

In addition to the address given by Rev. Zerbe which was scheduled for the first afternoon, the Hon. W. F. Kopp delivered a fine talk. These two men are familiar with Wayland and its growth and the large audience was favored with two addresses that were directly in line with the spirit of the time.

The afternoon’s baseball game between Brighton and Wayland resulted in a win for the visitors by a score of 8 to 0. Brighton brought a good team here and they played a fast game. They were entitled to the victory in every way.

Thursday night a home talent program was given which demonstrated clearly that our community can produce as good musicians and readers as can be found anywhere. One of the outstanding features of the three days was the parade which was put on Friday morning. It would be hard to beat this exhibition in any man’s town. The parade was headed by Mayor Magdefrau, mounted on a beautiful horse, followed by the participants in the following order: (Contributor’s note --- this is not a full list, as I was unable to find the last part of the article):
