Part of the problem is that your stepmother's name is Ethel and not Edith. According to the 1920 and 1930 Michigan censuses, Ethel is enumerated as the wife of R. B. Canfield.

She died on November 6, 1930.

Death Date: November 6, 1930
Pontiac, Oakland, Michigan, United States
Female, age 44; married;
Birth Date: October 15, 1886
Birthplace: Ithaca, Michigan
Father's Name: Robt Humphrey
Mother's Name: Iona Augustine
