A likely possibility for Ulysses' parents are John and Hannah McFarland. They are both enumerated in the 1850 census in Richland, Holmes, Ohio, United States, both 53 and born in Pennsylvania. Microfilm M432, Roll 696; Page: 250B; On the previous page, Page 250A, in 1850, Ulises McFarland, age 19 and Martha McFarland, age 18 are enumerated. There is a marriage record in Millersburg, Holmes County, Ohio for Ulysses McFarland and Martha Sheldon on November 15, 1849.

On Findagrave.com, Ulysses is posted as being buried in the Eldora City Cemetery in Hardin County, Iowa with parents listed as John McFarland and Hannah Chain.
