Betty Jane Hunt, 93, passed away on August 11, 2018 at the Mary Greeley Israel Family Hospice House. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m., Friday, August 17 at the Alden United Methodist Church. Her funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 18, with burial following at Alden Cemetery. The Surls Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Betty Jane, the daughter of Thomas and Ellen (Male) Tollakson, was born May 11, 1925 in McCallsburg, Iowa. She was a graduate of Radcliffe High School and Iowa Teachers College of Cedar Falls. Betty taught country school then kindergarten before her marriage to James William Hunt on June 26, 1948 in Radcliffe, Iowa.

Betty was a proud mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family. Betty was actively involved in her children and grandchildren’s lives by attending as many of their school events as possible and gifting them with many of her craft projects. She was a natural teacher extending her love of reading, crocheting, knitting, sewing, crafting and baking with her children and grandchildren. Even teaching Adult Education courses at the Alden School.

Throughout her life, Betty was active in several organizations. She had been an active member of her church, Alden United Methodist Church, for over 50 years. Betty was a member of the United Methodist Women Fellowship, Faith Circle and attended weekly bible study. She was also a member of American Legion Auxiliary in Alden.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Jim; granddaughter Cassie Gerdes; sister Margaret Anderson; sisters-in-law: Iola Tollakson, Luella Maine, Norma Hunt; brothers-in-law: Raymond Anderson, Lowell Maine, Nathan Hunt, Delbert Hunt and Wallace Last

Betty is lovingly remembered by her children: Patricia (Dan) Zimansky of Tracy, Minnesota, Charles (Lora) Hunt of Britt, Janet (Wayne) Greufe of Blairsburg, Kenneth Hunt of Stanhope, Phyllis (James) Greenfield of Williams, and Brenda (Tim) Gerdes of Story City. Her seventeen grandchildren: Holly (Steve) Zimansky-Klubertanz, Ryan and James Zimansky; Jerri Hill, Andrew (Betsy) Hunt; Amy (Dave) Trask, Toni (Steve) Neuberger, Lindsay (Herschel) Jacquay, Stephanie (Matt) Hall; Amanda (Neil) Dougherty, Dana (Yassir) Hunt; Brian, Carrie, Trenton (Haley) and Molly Greenfield; Jordan (Alec) Paup, Benjamin Gerdes and her 28 great-grandchildren; Her brother Robert Tollakson of Ankeny; sisters-in-law: Lola Last of Alden, Mavis Day of Vancouver, Washington; brother-in-law Russell Hunt of Monroe, Washington; many nieces, nephews, and friends.
