ALDEN PIONEER DIES
Alden Catlin, Aged 80 Years, Was Direst
Descendant of John Alden

Special to the Times Republican
Iowa Fall, July 22-Just twenty hours after passing his 80th birthday, Alden Catlin, a direct descendant of John Alden, of Mayflower fame, passed away at his home in Alden. The death of Mr. Catlin records the passing of another of the earliest pioneers of Iowa and one of those who, in an early day following the Spirit Lake massacre, gathered with neighbors in a log cabin and successfully defended the lives of their settlement from an Indian raid. Mr. Catlin was born in Ashfield, Mass, July 14, 1831. He came to Alden in 1856, and, being a carpenter by trade, helped build the first house erected in that town. Mr. Catlin was twice married, his first wife dying in 1896. In 1900, he was married to Mrs. Belinda Williams who survives him as do two daughters born to the first union, Mrs. W. B. Miller, of Alden and Mrs. Alice M. Willey, of Long Beach, Cal. The funeral was held Monday and the interment took place in the cemetery in Alden.
