COULTER - Carl D. Johnson, 77, of Coulter died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton. Memorial services will be Wednesday, Dec. 10, at 10:30 a.m. at the Morgan United Methodist Church, rural Dows, with Rev. David Gobeli officiating. Inurnment will be in the Coulter Cemetery.
Carl was born May 21, 1926, in Alden, Minn., to Orin and Elfreda (Johnson) Johnson. He attended the Lakota Public Schools. Carl served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during WWII, from 1943-1945, as a motor machinist mate on the LSM311. He received the purple heart when he was wounded while participating in the Battle of Leyte Island. On June 11, 1949, he was united in marriage to Avis Mitchell in Mason City. Carl was a member of the Morgan United Methodist Church. He was employed by the Maytag Co. in Hampton as an industrial engineer, retiring in 1982. After his retirement, he owned and operated Mother's Place in Coulter, where he enjoyed playing pepper and cribbage. Gardening, woodworking and being a grandpa to the local kids were among his favorites.
Survivors include his wife, Avis, of Coulter; three sons, Greg of Winthrop, Mass., Tim of Dows, and Jeff and wife Julie of Ames; two daughters, Kris, and husband Dennis Pardikes of Palos Park, Ill., and Linda Johnson of Santa Cruz, Calif.; three sisters, Betty Johnson of Mesa, Ariz., Marilyn Scott of Oceanside, Calif., Marge Koppen of Augusta, Ga.; two brothesr, Harlan of California, Orin (Satch) Johnson Jr. of Red Wing, Minn.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Dan; and one sister, Edele Parker.
Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home of Hampton is in charge of arrangements.
