ROCK ISLAND, ILL. - Viola Edna Smith, 93, of Rock Island, formerly of Iowa Falls, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at Rock Island. Graveside services will be Saturday, Nov. 15, at Union Cemetery with Rev. Dave Schwechel officiating.

Viola was born April 5, 1910, in Iowa Falls to Charlie and Hanna (Roskam) Smith. She graduated from Iowa Falls High School in 1928, Ellsworth College in 1932 and the Iowa Falls Conservatory of Music in 1934. She moved to Chicago, Ill., in 1936, and became a subscriber relations correspondent , methods and procedures for TIME Magazine in Chicago, retiring in 1970. Viola moved from Evanston, Ill., to Friendship Manor in Rock Island in 1983. She was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Iowa Falls, Ministering circle of King's Daughters of Rock Island and First Baptist church choir in Evanston.

Survivors include her niece, Wilma Anders and husband Henry of Hubbard; two nephews, K. Dale Smith and wife Carol of Marshalltown and Robert M. Smith and wife Judy of Muscatine; 12 grand nieces and nephews; and several great-grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death be her parents and two brothers.

Surls Funeral Home of Iowa Falls is in charge of arrangements.
