HUBBARD - Lorraine Dee Hornung, 74, of Hubbard died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Funeral services were Monday, Oct. 20, at Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard. Burial was in the Hubbard Cemetery.

Lorraine was born on April 22, 1929, to Marion and Margie (Hauser) Upton. Lorraine attended Whitten Community School, graduating in 1946. She attended Drake University for two years and obtained her teaching certification and later continued her education at Drake University, graduating in 1971. Lorraine taught second grade in Hubbard from 1948-1950, and resumed teaching in 1961, continuing her teaching career until 1991.

On June 14, 1950, Lorraine married Robert Hornung at Whitten. The couple farmed near Hubbard. She was a member of Whitten Christian Church and later became a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard. Lorraine was active in church and the community, serving on the library board and various church boards. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Beta Theta Chapter. Her bulletin boards at the Care Center, church, school and library were enjoyed by many.

Survivors include one son, George Hornung and wife Kristi of Fairfield, Ill.; one daughter, Barbara Doering of Hubbard; three grandchildren, David and Brooke Doering and Taylor Hornung; two sisters, Arlene Fuller and Beatrice Elliott; five nieces; and three nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her parents; her step-father, Robert Bavender; one brother, Wallace Upton; and one sister, Colleen Upton.

Boeke Funeral Home of Hubbard was in charge of arrangements.
