ELDORA - Richard D. Smith, 66, of Eldora died at his home Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, while under the care of Homeward Hospice. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Eldora with Pastor Corey Larson officiating. Burial will be in Eastlawn Memory Garden in Eldora with full military honors by Walter-Sayer Post No. 182 of the American Legion and Roll-Harless No. 3974 of the V.F.W.

Richard was born Nov. 4, 1936, in Eldora to Richard and Ethel (Johnson) Smith. He was raised in Eldora, graduating from Eldora High School in 1954. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1954, and was honorably discharged in 1957. On Feb. 14, 1982, Richard was united in marriage to Sandra Clapsaddle in Eldora. He had previously worked for Fisher Controls of Marshalltown, the Iowa State Training School for Boys in Eldora and Clapsaddle Sales of Whitten. In April of 1988, Richard was forced to retire due to health problems. He was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Eldora, and a 29-year member of Walter-Sayer Post No. 182 of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra; one daughter, Stacey Frerichs and husband Chris of Des Moines; one son, Jason Smith and wife Kellie of Eldora; one step-son, Troy McDonald and wife Tammy of Eldora; and three grandchildren, Hannah Frerichs, Justyn Smith and Melinda McDonald. Preceding him in death were his parents.

Creps-Abels Funeral Home of Eldora Is in charge of arrangements.
