PARKERSBURG - Harvey Louis Harberts, 88, of Parkersburg died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Funeral services were Monday, Oct. 6, at the Reformed Church of Stout with Pastor David H. Powers officiating. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg.

Harvey was born on Nov. 29, 1914, to John and Hannah (Casjens) Harberts near Holland. He received his education at Beaver No. 4 country school in Grundy County. On March 10, 1941, he was united in marriage to Reka Tjebkes at the parsonage of Coster Christian Reformed Church. Harvey was inducted into the U.S. Army on Dec. 16, 1942. He served with the Medical Detachment of the 706th Tank Destroyer Battalion in Paris, Texas. He received an honorable discharge on Feb. 17, 1944, and returned to Iowa where the couple made their home in Parkersburg. Harvey worked as a farm hand, trucker and mechanic for an implement dealer prior to his 26 years of employment at Viking Pump in Cedar Falls. He was a member of the Reformed Church of Stout and the men's choir. Harvey was a lifetime member of the Parkersburg American Legion Post No. 285, Butler County Volunteer of the year in 1990, and served with the Historical House restoration in Parkersburg. He enjoyed the fellowship with his friends at the senior center in Parkersburg, and singing with the Silver Beaver vocal group.

Survivors included one daughter, Brenda Hempen and husband Harlan of Cedar Falls; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Orville Harberts of New Hartford; and one sister-in-law, Vella Harberts of Garnavillo. He was preceded in death by his wife, Reka; his parents; one brother, Dick Harberts; and son-in-law, Robert Berry.

Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home of Parkersburg was in charge of arrangements.
