Orpha Alice Benson was born in 1864 [1863], in Tama county and passed away May 23, 1929 at her home in Gifford. In 1881 she was united in marriage to Peter McDonald who preceded her in death in 1925. To this union were born seven children all of whom survive. They are Mrs. Jay Rainsbarger, Steamboat Rock; Mrs. James Lawless, Steamboat Rock; Mrs. Emily Markley, Spencer, Iowa; Mrs. Ed Lepley, Union; Mrs. Dennis Chesnut, Eldora; Mrs. Wm. Vaughn, Gifford and Mrs. C. B. Anderson, Marshalltown. She also leaves two brothers, S. E. Benson of Hayfield, Iowa, and I. H. Benson of Belmond, Iowa, and one sister, Mrs. S. E. Knapp of LaPorte City, besides a host of relatives and friends. For many years she was a member of the Gifford church. For several years she was in very poor health never fully recovering from a goiter operation two years ago. She bore her suffering with patience.
The funeral services were held in the Gifford church conducted by Rev. Miller of Union. The music was furnished by Mr. Hickman and daughters. The pallbearers were V. R. Wardman, Geo. Gunderson, Ed Adams, Sam Lepley, Peter Lepley and E. A. Wilson. Burial was in the Shephard cemetery.
We take this way of thanking our many friends and neighbors for their kind acts and sympathy during our mother's last illness, also for the beautiful floral offerings.
