MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.-Albert LeRoy Collins, 83, of Minneapolis, formerly of Ackley, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Minneapolis. Services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 1:30 p.m. at St. John's United Church of Christ in Ackley with burial in Oakwood Cemetery, Ackley. Rev. Michael Dack will officiate. Military rites will be performed by Elliot-Keninger American Legion Post No. 252 of Ackley.
Albert was born June 23, 1919, in Alden to Ralph and Jennie Watt Collins. He graduated from Alden High School in 1938 and married Rebecca Baumert that same year. He served in the United States Army in the South Pacific during World War II where he received several honors, including the Bronze Star. After his discharge he and his wife divorced. They had no children. In June 1949, he married Pearl Brooks in St. Paul. They farmed near Ackley from 1950-92. He also drove the school bus and canning factory trucks for many years. He was a member of the Elliot-Keninger American Legion Post No. 252 and St. John's United Church of Christ in Ackley.
He is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Homan and husband John of Nashville, Tenn. and Barbara Hays and husband Robert of Shoreview, Minn.; two grandsons; a sister Margaret Engene of Woodbury, Minn.; a sister-in-law Roxie Drew of Tucker, Ga.; a niece and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Pearl in 1984.
Sietsema Funeral Home of Ackley was in charge of arrangements.
