ACKLEY-Max "Barney" Barnholt, 79, of Ackley, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at his home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 23, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Church of Christ in Ackley with burial in Oakwood Cemetery, Ackley. Rev. Michael Dack will officiate. Visitation will be Wednesday, from 6-8 p.m. at Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley.

Max was born Aug. 4, 1922, in Cedar Rapids, to Charles and Amanda Miehe Barnholt. He graduated from Waterloo East in 1940 and served in the United States Army in World War II. On June 16, 1973, he married Darlene Bergman Ulfers at the Ackley Methodist Church. He had been employed as an in-line typist for the Waterloo Courier.
Max was a lifetime member of the Elliott-Keninger American Legion Post No. 252 of Ackley.

He is survived by four sons, Joe Hobson and wife, Jenn, of Allison, John Ulfers of Ackley, Randy Ulfers and wife, Brenda, of Ackley, and Richard Ulfers and wife, Karen, of Lemoore, Calif.; two daughters, Anita Echelberry and her husband, Jerry, and Bonnie Wiederkehr and her husband, Richard, all of Ackley; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Maxine Butts of Altoona; a brother, Floyd Swanson and wife, Donna, of Cedar Falls; and a sister-in-law, Helen Bergman of Ackley. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Darlene.
