DOWS-Martha Hegland, 92, of Dows, formerly of Ames, died Friday, July 20, 2001, at the USA Health Care Center in Dows. Services were held Tuesday, July 24, at the Elledge Funeral Chapel in Dows, with burial in Otis Grove Cemetery, Dows. Rev. Paul Thompson officiated.
Martha was born Jan. 19, 1909, on a farm near Dows, to Julius and Anna Marie Severson Iverson. She attended rural school in Oakland Township and attended Dows High School. On Aug. 21, 1954, she married Lester Hegland in Rock Rapids. They made their home in Ames and vicinity, and after the death of her husband, she entered the USA Health Center in Dows in October 1999. She was a member of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church and the Senior Citizens Center, both in Ames.
She is survived by two brothers, Henry Iverson of Dows, and Andrew Iverson of Fort Dodge; a sister, Helen Christofferson of Eugene, Ore.; eight nieces and nephews; and two stepchildren, Richard Hegland of Ames, and Julie Stephens of Atlanta, Ga. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1987; a brother, Stewart Iverson; and a stepdaughter, Emilie Patten.
