ACKLEY-Byron Joseph Arends, 82, of Ackley, died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Services were held Tuesday, June 19, at West Friesland Presbyterian Church at Ackley, with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Bruce Baillie officiated.

Byron was born Jan. 28, 1919, in rural Ackley, to Jerry and Nancie Ulfers Arends. He attended rural schools and served in the United States Army during World War II . He returned home and farmed with his parents until their retirement. On March 6, 1956, he married Everdena Van Loh at the East Friesland Presbyterian Church and they lived on the family farm until moving to Ackley in 1981. He enjoyed working with bees, sawing wood, gardening and cracking nuts. He played gospel music on an accordian and played at nursing homes and churches. He was a member of the West Friesland Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon and on other committees.

He is survived by his wife; a sister, Norma Lou Viet and husband, Bernard, of Ackley, and many other relatives.

Sietsema Funeral Home of Ackley, was in charge of arrangements.
