CLEAR LAKE - John H. Quinn, 88, of Clear Lake, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 19, 2015, at Legacy Pointe Senior Living Community in Iowa City.
John was born on May 16, 1927, son of Harry and Katherine (Seibolt) Quinn. He grew up on the family farm near Woden. Shortly after high school, John met the love of his life, Natalie Scholtes of Algona. John and Natalie were married on Sept. 10, 1951 in Seattle, WA, where John was stationed in the U.S. Army.
After being honorably discharged, John and Natalie moved back to take over the Quinn family farm where they raised their five children. John expanded the farm operation in the early 1970s with the purchase of an adjoining 160 acres. Son David moved back to the farm in 1978, and John and Natalie semi-retired, moving to Clear Lake. John continued to help with planting and harvesting until full retirement at age 80. In 2008, six wind turbines were added to the Quinn farm, marking a modern-day addition to the 125-year-old farm.
John was a history buff, avid reader and sharp card player, rarely losing a cribbage game. Clear Lake provided much enjoyment for John and Natalie for over 36 years. John loved sailing and boating, and was involved in a local wine making club. They loved traveling to see other parts of the world, with Ireland being a favorite. In later years, John enjoyed driving across the country to visit his son and daughter and their families in California. His eight grandchildren were a source of great joy during retirement years. John and Natalie moved to Iowa City in December 2014, close to their daughter.
In addition to his loving wife of 63 years, John is survived by their five children, Tim Quinn (Caroline) of Davis, CA; David Quinn of Britt, IA who is farming the family farm; Linda Quinn (Gary Henry) of Iowa City; Valerie Quinn (Roger Fujii) of Sacramento, CA; and Jim Quinn (Christiane) of Columbia, MO; eight grandchildren, Rachel, Ross, Natalie, Monica, Yvan, Quinn, Ryan and Fran; and his sister Jeanette Prince of Steven’s Point, WI.
A private funeral service will be held. Graveside services at the Bingham Township Cemetery near Woden, Iowa, will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 24, 2015. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Iowa City Hospice. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.lensingfuneral.com.
