Oscar "Jim" Olson, 1924-2005

Oscar James Olson, 80, of Garner, died on Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at the St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota.

His memorial service was held on Saturday, April 2, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner, with the Rev. Henry Friedrich officiating. Music was provided by organist, Barb Mrosko who accompanied soloist, Beverly Cataldo and congregational hymns. Ushers were John Haugen and Gary Mrosko.

Honorary bearers were his grandchildren, Christina Elliott, Wade Elliott, Melissa Elliott, James Schiller, Kara Schiller, David Schiller, Abby Olson, Sarah Olson, Jason Thompson, Jeremy Thompson, Kimberly Vore, Brad Olson, Ashley Olson, Michael Olson, Kelli Wreghitt and Steven Wreghitt. Interment was in the Concord Township Cemetery, Garner. Military rites were conducted by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit. The Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner was in charge of the arrangements.

Oscar James Olson, the son of Oscar and Anna (Gansveld) Olson, was born on May 3, 1924 at Britt. He graduated from the Britt High School in 1943.

After graduation, he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He served his country in the medical detachment of the 496th Quartermaster Battalion in the European Theatre during WW II. Following his honorable discharge on November 10, 1945, he returned to Britt to continue his education at the Britt Junior College.

On July 8, 1968, he married Elaine (Ashland) Wreghitt at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Jim was employed as a measurement technician for Northern Natural Gas in Ventura for over 30 years retiring in 1983. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and playing softball in church league. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church where he served as a trustee. He also was a member of the Edwin Jante VFW Post No. 5515.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine of Garner; seven children, Jean Elliott of Brown Deer, Wisconsin, Barbara Schiller of McHenry, Illinois, Deborah Olson of May City, Jennifer (Chris) Golien of Clear Lake, James (Barbara) Olson of Belgium, Wisconsin, Roger (Cathy) Olson of Vero Beach, Florida and Bill (Lori) Wreghitt of Ventura; 16 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by four sisters, Betty Lowe of Mason City, Arlene Schutjer of Mason City, Marjorie Halfpop of Belmond and Marcella (George) Krambeer of Shellsburg; two brothers, Kenneth (Charlotte) Olson of Mason City and Merrill (Frieda) Olson of Britt; a sister-in-law, Shirley Olson of Britt; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Roger Schiller; sister, Bonnie Olson; brother, Robert Olson; sister-in-law, Jeannette Ashland Caspers; and brothers-in-law, J.C. Lowe, Kenneth Schutjer, Lloyd Halfpop and Robert Ashland.
