1913-1991

Services for Mrs. Berneace Cataldo, 78, of Garner, who died Friday, May 3, 1991 at Concord Care Center in Garner were held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 7, at the United Presbyterian Church in Garner with Rev. Robert T. Ellis as officiant.

Serving as pianist and organist were Lucile Wesson and Duane Cummings. Vocal music was provided by Mrs. Beverly Cataldo and Brent Cataldo. Ushers were Harlan Haberkamp and Don Auchampach.

Honorary bearers were Berneace's grandchildren Brian Cataldo, Brent Cataldo, Kristine Cataldo, Jeff Elling, Dave Elling, Lisa Elling, Michael Elling, Sheree Pedersen, Bree Pedersen, Kirk Pedersen, Amber Gatchel and Jill Gatchel.

Active bearers were Calvin Peterson, Dr. Clifton Peterson, Ray Peterson, Dennis Toft, Gerald Pedersen and Roger Gatchel.

Burial was in Concord Township Cemetery in Garner. Visitation was held at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner.

Berneace Kathryn Cataldo, the daughter of Charles Wesley and Ida Moncina (Ingebritson) Peterson, was born April 15, 1913 on the top floor of the train depot in Livermore, where her father was depot agent. Her family farmed in the Galt Dows area and then moved into Dows. After graduating from Dows High School in 1931, she worked at the Ford Garage as a bookkeeper for Gerald Keister.

August 30, 1932, she was married to Samuel Cataldo at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They lived in Iowa Falls and then moved to Clarion
where they owned and operated the Clarion Food Market. In 1942, they moved to Alden and the following year to Garner. They farmed north of Garner for 15 years; moving back into town in 1962. She had moved to her new apartment in October of 1990. Berneace's life centered around her family and music. She had been pianist and organist at the Presbyterian Churches in Dows, Clarion, Alden and Garner.

She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, U. P.W. and Naomi Circle. She had also belonged to the Garner Garden Club.

She is survived by her children, Dean Cataldo and his wife, Beverly of Garner, and their children, Brian, Brent and Kristine, Don Cataldo of Eugene, OR, Mrs. Kathryn Elling and her husband, Walter of Medford, OR and their children, Jeff, David, Lisa and Michael, Mrs. Karen Pedersen and her husband, Gerald of Garner and their children, Sheree, Bree and Kirk and Mrs. Barbara Gatchel and her husband, Roger of Marshalltown and their daughters, Amber and Jill; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Toft and her husband, Louis of Ames and Mrs. Marcella Rang of Jacksonville, FL; three brothers, Calvin W. Peterson of Badger, Dr. Clifton E. Peterson of Kenosha, WI and Ray L. Peterson of Kenosha, WI; two sisters in law, Mrs. Camil Peterson of Phoenix, AZ and Mrs. Aleida Peterson of Fort Lauderdale, FL; six nieces; and six nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Cataldo, August 29, 1977; her infant son, Larry Dean Cataldo and her parents.
