Pioneer Was in Chicago When It Only Had Store and Blacksmith Shop.

Britt, June 1 - Funeral services were held this afternoon in the Congregational church for Mrs, Mary H. Black, 92, who died Tuesday morning. The Rev. Mr. Southgate was in charge.

Mrs. Mary Staplin Black was born in Greene, Chenango county, New York and at the age of 2 years moved by covered wagon with her parents to Ohio. Later, at the age of 8, she moved to Illinois. She passed through Chicago when it was composed of one store, a blacksmith shop and a post office.

In 1892 she moved to Britt which had since been her home. She was a active member of the Congregational church for 33 years. She was also a life member of the W.C.T.U. She was a great lover of flowers and her house in winter and garden in summer were always filled with beautiful blossoms.

It was while transplanting some of her flowers on April 13 that she slipped and fell, fracturing her hip. Since that time she was confined to her bed. From her bed she directed the making of her flower garden. She is survived by one son, Marion Staplin.
