Hold services longtime area farmer

Funeral services for John U. Smith, longtime Forest City area farmer, were held Saturday at the United Methodist church with the Rev. B. Gordon Packard officiating.

Mr. Smith, 88, died of an apparent heart attack at Forest City Community Hospital Thursday [29 Apr 1976] while visiting his wife, who is a patient at the hospital.

Mrs. Gerald Krukow was soloist for the services and Mrs. Franklin Bienert, organist. Casket bearers were Franklin Bienert, Richard Clark, Jerome Erdman, Dean Gambell, Gerald Krukow and Earl Peterson.

Interment was at Madison township cemetery with the Olsen-Petersen Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

John U. Smith was born at Columbus Junction on Dec. 2, 1887, the son of Charles and Phoebe (Patterson) Smith. As a young man he worked for the railroad in the Des Moines area.

On Dec. 29, 1915, he was married to Lorna Ritter at the Methodist church parsonage in Mason City. The couple farmed in Ellington township, near Garner, and in 1931 moved to a farm in Madison township.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Ina Mae Gambell of Forest City; a granddaughter; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Ruth Lewis of Ames.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a brother.
