Rites held Tuesday for Helen L. Gjerde

Funeral services for former Forest City resident, Mrs. Helen Gjerde of Garner, were held Tuesday afternoon at Fertile Church of Christ. The Rev. Dennis Ganz officiated.

Mrs. Dennis Erickson served as organist. Casket bearers were Michael Kinsella, Ronald Anderson, Robert Ouverson, Curtis Ouverson, Clarence Ouverson and Maurice Studer. Burial was in Madison Township cemetery in Forest City with Cataldo Funeral home handling arrangements.

Mrs. Gjerde, 73, died Saturday [15 Nov 1980] at Concord Manor Nursing home in Garner.

Helen Louise Gjerde, the daughter of Charles A. and Anna Mae Anderson Hodson, was born May 2, 1907, in Madison county. She attended school at Forest City, graduated from Thompson high school and received her teaching certificate at Cedar Falls.

Mrs. Gjerde taught in the Forest City, Joice, Fertile and Garner areas. Feb. 2, 1933, she married Selmer M. Gjerde at Bethany, Mo. They farmed north of Crystal Lake for several years and then in the Fertile area. In 1949 they moved to Garner. She had also worked as a matron at the Cerro Gordo county home for 15 years.

Mrs. Gjerde was a member of Fertile Church of Christ.

Survivors include two sons, the Rev. Wayne G. Gjerde of Ogden and Charles E. Gjerde of Murray, Nev.; four grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Lois Austin of Crystal Lake, Mrs. Laurence (Hazel) Greiman and Mrs. Harold (Eva) Hall, both of Garner; and two brothers, Donald Hodson of Crystal Lake and Ralph Hodson of Britt. She was preceded in death by her husband, Selmer, Dec. 16, 1960, her parents, and a brother, Howard Hodson.
