Fr. John W. HemannGladys Irene Schmidt, the daughter of Roy and Florence (Thorne) Rutz, was born November 3, 1913 in Swygert, Illinois. She was a member of the first 4-H Club formed in the state of Illinois. Gladys came to Garner, Iowa with her family in her early teens during the 1920's. She was united in marriage to Arnold Raymond Schmidt on May 29, 1937 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner. They made their home on the Schmidt family farm west of Garner. Arnold passed away on June 2, 1970. Gladys continued to live on the family farm until November of 1973 when she made her home in Forest City. In August of 1994, she moved to Prairie View Apartments in Garner. On April 29, 1998 she became a resident of Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake. Gladys spent her life doing
volunteer work in her churches and had a special interest in the Association for Retarded Citizens, She was an avid gardener, especially enjoying the beauty of her flowers.She was an active member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, St. Boniface Rosary Society, Hancock Winnebago ARC, Hancock County Farm Bureau Women's Group, Garfield Homemakers Club, St. James Guild in Forest City and Kum-A-Long Club in Forest City. She was also a member of the Royal Neighbors of America since June 13, 1947, and had earned a 50-year membership pin.
She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Kumsher and her husband, Ronald, of Garner; a grandson, Gregory Kumsher and his wife, Jennifer, and their son, Tyler, of Garner; a granddaughter, Janan Thilges and her husband, Brent, of Algona; two sisters, Marjorie Lobnitz and her husband, Roger, of Normal, IL and Marilyn Miner and her husband, Jack, of Corydon, Iowa; six sisters-in-law in Iowa, Margaret Rutz of Garner, Jeanne Rutz of Clive, Norma Rutz of Johnston and Gertrude Schmidt, Erma Linda Schmidt and Ada Linda Schmidt of Garner; and 18 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold; her parents; five brothers, Lionel, Stanley, Harold, Jack and Clare Rutz; and a nephew, Tom Rutz.
