Mabel M. Johnson, 85, of Britt died Sunday, October 15, 2000 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Dodge officiating. He was assisted by Deacon Tom Haan of the Catholic Diocese of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Music was provided by organist, Tammy Johnson who accompanied soloist, Eulinda (Lin) Rasmussen and congregational hymns. Ushers were Dennis Zuehl and Robert Bravick. Casket bearers were Betty Baker, Merrill Olson, Brad Meier, Brad Beek, Richard Johnson and Karen Johnson. Interment was at Evergreen Cemetery.

Mabel Martha Johnson, the daughter of Dick and Martha (Dahlman) Spieker, was born October 3, 1915 on a farm in Bingham Township in Hancock County. She attended school at Bingham Township #7 and worked for a number of families as a mother's helper. On December 27, 1944 she was married to Frank L. Johnson at Britt. They made their home at Carlisle, Penn. until Frank's discharge from the service. They returned to Iowa and lived in Garner for ten years and in 1955 moved to Britt. Mabel was a homemakers but worked several years as a school cook. She enjoyed her family, crafts, quilting, flower gardening, fishing and card playing.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, UMW, Rebekah Lodge, American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries, Britt Senior Citizens, King's Daughters and was a Girl Scout Leader.

She is survived by her two daughters, Janice Kay Haan and her husband, Charles, of Stillwater, Okla. and Janet Fay Soboroff and her husband, Stephen, of Iowa City; four grandchildren, Patricia Haan, Christopher Haan and his wife, Rie, and their children Katrina and Daniel, Pamela Haan and Shane Soboroff; and a sister-in-law, Hattie Spieker of Britt.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, May 22, 1995; parents; three brothers, Martin, Lawrence and Jerry Spieker; five sisters, Della Foerstch, Adeline Spieker, Helen Spieker, Mary Lassahn and Anna Hillenga; and an infant brother.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Cataldo Funeral Home, Britt, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.
