George Patterson Carothers was born May 20, 1848 at Kimbolton, Guernsey, Ohio to William L. Carothers and Sarah Dales. His parents had emigrated from Ireland to Ohio. Believe he was the 4th of 12 children.

George Patterson Carothers can be found in the 1850 census living at Monroe, Guernsey, Ohio:William Carothers 33, Sarah Carothers 27, William Carothers 7, Jno (John) Carothers 5, George P Carothers 2 (Note: the original census taker had bad penmanship and thus the names were transcribed in error and hard to decipher.)

George next found in the 1860 and 1880 censuses living at Kimbolton, Liberty, Guernsey, Ohio:
1860: William Carothers 43, Sarah Carothers 49, William D Carothers 16, John Carothers 14, George Carothers 12, Margaret J Carothers 9, Agnes Carothers 7, Andrew Carothers 3, James Carothers 5.

1880: George P. Carothers 29, Emma Carothers 23, Sarah E. Carothers 4, John H. Carothers 3, James D. Carothers 1, Rocilla (Rosella) J. Carothers 3 months.

It is possible that George fought in the Civil War as he would have been the age to be eligible in the 1860's but I can't find 100% proof that he did enlist. Also cannot find him in the 1870 census.

George married Emma Ingram on November 12, 1874 at Kimbolton, Guernsey, Ohio.

They had 11 children:
Sarah Ellen; John Hamilton; James Dale; Rosella Jane; William Garfield; Etta Martha; Elizabeth Miller; Mary Josephine; Minnie Agnes; Margaret Alys; George Albert (or Albert George).

George and Emma Carothers and children moved to Garner, Hancock, Iowa in the spring of 1888 and began farming.

Found family in the 1895 census at Concord, Hancock, Iowa: George 47; Emma 38, Sadie 19; John 18; James 16; Jennie 14; Willie 13; Etta 11; Lizzie 9; Josie 7; Minnie 4; Maggie 2; Albert under age 1.

George suffered from heart disease and died on March 6, 1900 at Hancock, Iowa. He is buried at the Concord Cemetery at Garner, Hancock, Iowa.

Contributor's comments: Variations for spelling of Carothers surname found: Carrothers, and Crothers and more. Censuses were transcribed as found, obvious spelling errors not corrected.
